The aggressive environment of this location, i.e. three coal-fired power plants, one nuclear power plant, one chemical manufacturer and a metal smelting operation are all within a few miles of the locks and dam, made the coating choice critical. All of the handrail, parapets, stairwells and catwalk grating were galvanized, based on the fact that other galvanized material in service for 4 years showed no signs of corrosion of the substrate material.
